FORTHCOMING EVENTS
The photograph on the front cover of this flyer was taken from inside the gates of Sarum College. It is situated within the Cathedral Close and looks across the green to Salisbury Cathedral. It is a beautiful setting and a unique and distinguished location for a meeting.
We have commissioned two new Masses. One from Paul Stubbings (Director of Music at St Mary’s Specialist Music School, Edinburgh) and another from Christina Raven who is an SSG Composer and Choir Director at St Thomas More Church, Knebworth. She has also been involved with music for theatre. We will also be working at a very new Mass from Margaret Rizza. She is renowned as a composer of contemplative music. Her website is both fascinating and impressive. Try the interview with Sally Harper. Each of these composers will be with us for part, if not the whole of the meeting, and we will work to celebrate these Masses. Paul Stubbings is a prestigious organist and we are hoping to include a recital from him. Patrick Russill (Chief Examiner at Royal College of Organists, Head of Choral Conducting at Royal Academy of Music and Director of Music at The London Oratory) is willing to be with us on 29th October for however we may best enjoy his talents. Perhaps an Organ Forum? We are fortunate to have engaged former Bishop David Stancliffe (who is a Fellow of Sarum College and an eminent conductor of 16c choral music including Monteverdi’s Vespers in St Mark’s Venice) to present to us from his material of a recent three year cycle of books on The Gospels in Art, Music and Literature. The former Presenter of Salisbury Cathedral Rev’d Jeremy Davies will share his expertise with us on the fascinating subject of the Sarum Rite. There will be input from Dom Alban Nunn OSB on Modal issues and perhaps approaches to accompaniment if time holds out. We very much hope that Dom Alexander McCabe OSB will be able to present the Introit, Ps and Communion from the revised Ampleforth Gradual each day for Mass. We also hope for further monastic input from within the group as plans gather over the next few months and we are still open to further suggestions. Please aim to arrive at 2pm for a 3pm start to the meeting on Monday 26th October. Departures are scheduled for after breakfast on Friday 30th October. However, we may have something to offer for that morning. More anon. We look forward to receiving your bookings and to welcoming you to the meeting. Sr Jean, Sr Julian and Abbot Richard.
